With William Clarke’s All England Eleven now thoroughly established – in 1849 they played 22 three-day matches – and the three leading Notts players, William Clarke, George Parr and Joseph Guy each playing in 21 AEE games, the drawing power of a Notts team was considerably reduced. Add to this the failure, financially, of the matches staged by Trent Bridge proprietor John Chapman in 1848 and the result in 1849 was that no Notts county games were played.
