Notts played no first-class cricket in 1850. John Chapman, the proprietor of Trent Bridge, did not concern himself with major cricket matches on the ground and pigeon-shooting, athletic meetings and other activities were held to bring in some income.
Cricket continued to be played by two local clubs - The Nottingham Amateurs and the Nottingham Commercial both hired Trent Bridge for their home matches.
