Captain – George Parr
The Surrey club paid all expenses to set up a match with Notts at the Oval in June 1858. It was therefore unfortunate for the Surrey Committee that not only was George Parr injured and unable to play, but John Bickley, Cris Tinley and Charles Brampton were unable to obtain leave from their engagements. In the circumstances, Surrey allowed Notts the services of Alfred Diver, the Cambridge professional and Notts also included a young amateur, Richard Daft in the side. Notts lost by nine wickets. Surrey batted first and made 200 with John Jackson taking 5-97, Notts replied with 114 and, following-on, 194 with Diver top scoring with 46. Surrey easily knocked off their 109 target with Frederick Miller undefeated on 67.
Daft, though, with 13 and 44 not out gave such promise that he played for the North v South at Lord’s three weeks later, as well as the Gentlemen v Players at The Oval. Also included in the Notts eleven at The Oval was Alexander MacDougall (3 and 0) a Cambridge law student who lived at Wilford and was a very keen cricketer at club level. This was his only First-Class match for Notts.
Notts were also invited by Dr Richardson of Stockton-on-Tees to play a match against a combined Yorkshire and Durham side, late in September. John Hogg, the Burton Joyce wicket-keeper, took the place of Charley Brown. Parr won the toss and put his opponents in, which proved most effective, since Jackson (5-54) and Cris Tinley (4-42) bowled them out for 118. Brampton scored 33 as Notts made 140. The Combined Yorkshire and Durham were bowled out for 96 with James Grundy taking 4-19. On the last day at 3 o’clock, with Notts standing on 51-3 the Durham umpire, Jonathan Joy, unexpectedly declared the wicket unfit for further play. Notts required just 24 to win with seven wickets in hand. Julius Caesar, umpiring for Notts, was of a contrary opinion, but stumps were drawn.
