Charlie Shreck claims he’s ‘chomping at the bit’ to get his county season underway as Nottinghamshire return to Championship action with a trip to Edgbaston on Saturday.
The 31-year-old has missed the first two months of the season recovering from knee surgery and a shoulder problem but has been included in a 13-man squad to face Warwickshire.
And he said: “I get tetchy when I’m sitting on the sidelines watching matches so April and May have been difficult months for me.
“My knee operation went pretty much according to schedule but I then developed a shoulder injury which we have been trying to manage.
“Mick Newell didn’t want to risk making that worse in the one-day and Twenty20 matches, so I’ve been resting it for when we got back into four-day cricket.
“I’ve had a few Second XI matches and have bowled at the international sides during their practice sessions for the ICC World Twenty20, so I’m bowling fit. My shoulder is an issue that will have to be monitored and dealt with at the end of the season, but it seems fine at the moment.”
With administrative problems preventing him playing in the Notts Premier League - ‘very frustrating’, as he put it - Shreck has been able to get some competitive cricket in the Staffordshire League in the past two weeks.
And despite the fact Warwickshire’s three matches so far in the Championship have been high-scoring draws, the 6ft 7in opening bowler is desperate to get back into action.
He said: “I think Warwickshire’s two home games so far have seen about 15 wickets fall in total, so it could be a nice welcome back.
“The pitch can be a bit dead so it could be a first innings contest to see who scores more runs, and try and put the opposition under pressure. It worked for them in 2004 when they won the title and perhaps they’re looking at repeating that tactic.
“It may well be hard work but frankly I can’t wait to be back in the dressing room with the lads. It feels like I’ve missed half the season but as Mick’s pointed out to me, there’s still a lot of cricket left to play.”
Shreck will compete for the new ball slot with Luke Fletcher and Darren Pattinson, while Jason Brown could well be called upon to provide the spin option. Mark Wagh returns to the squad to face his former county at the expense of Alex Hales.
Squad to face Warwickshire:
Will Jefferson, Bilal Shafayat, Mark Wagh, Samit Patel, Adam Voges, Ali Brown, Chris Read (capt/wkt), Mark Ealham, Andre Adams, Luke Fletcher, Darren Pattinson, Charlie Shreck, Jason Brown.
