Andre Adams replaces Pattinson in a team otherwise unchanged from the draw with Durham UCCE with Ryan Sidebottom present in a four man pace attack.
Neil Edwards and Bilal Shafayat will open the batting for Nottinghamshire with Hashim Amla and Mark Wagh completing the top four.
“The players that featured against Durham earned the right to be there by their performances last year and in pre-season and I always planned to keep faith with them for the first competitive match,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell.
“It’s good for us to have Ryan in this game so hopefully he can bowl well and lead the attack for us.
“Kent are a strong batting side and we’ll have a discussion about our approach against one or two of their players but it will really come down to whether or not our bowlers out bowl theirs and if they do I’m sure we’ll get a good result.”
Chris Read captains the side with Andy Carter named as twelfth man.
