Stuart Broad claimed the crucial wicket of Marcus Trescothick as Nottinghamshire dismissed Somerset for 272 on the opening day of their LV= County Championship fixture.
Broad watched Trescothick pick out Hashim Amla at midwicket and went on to return 3-79 but Paul Franks was the pick of the Notts bowlers with 3-45.
Franks induced Craig Kieswetter to nick to Chris Read to reduce the visitors to 5-78 but stubborn middle order partnerships helped steer Somerset to a respectable score.
Andre Adams made the other early breakthrough when Arul Suppiah edged to Ali Brown at first slip. The New Zealander also accounted for tail-ender Charl Willoughby whose ungainly swipe found Mark Wagh at third man.
Notts reached 26-2 at the close after Neil Edwards went lbw from the second ball of the innings whilst Bilal Shafayat registered a single before he was caught by Trescothick off Alfonso Tomas.
“Both sides will be happy with their bowling efforts so far but we thought at one stage that we were going to restrict them to a much lower score,” said Franks, who has shown good form so far this season.
“Neither team will feel that they’re on top but there’s plenty in the pitch for the bowlers which will keep things interesting.
“I was pleased with my spells but I felt good against Kent without getting any real reward so of course it’s pleasing to take wickets."
Hashim Amla (12) and Mark Wagh (4) were untroubled and will resume for Nottinghamshire.
