Stuart Broad put Nottinghamshire on top with a mesmeric eight-over spell that yielded five wickets to leave Somerset’s second innings in tatters.

Broad’s burst reduced the visitors to 43-6 but an unbeaten stand from Trescothick and Wright steered the visitors to 120 without further loss.

Paul Franks and Hashim Amla top scored in Nottinghamshire’s first innings total of 250. The hosts trail by 142 runs but will approach day three in a positive frame of mind.

“Stuart took a bit of time to settle but once he found his line his pace was always going to trouble the batsmen,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell.

“The game is well poised but that run of wickets has certainly helped us and we’ve established a good platform.”

Trescothick was a mere spectator as Broad found form to remove first Suppiah, then Hildreth, DeBruyn, Kieswetter and Trego.

Hildreth went lbw before de Bruyn was caught at slip next ball. Kieswetter denied Broad his hat-trick but was caught behind without scoring.

Samit Patel gave Broad his fifth wicket with an athletic one-handed catch at short leg to restrict Peter Trego to 3.

Trescothick was dropped by the usually dependable hands of Neil Edwards off Andre Adams who had to settle for the wicket of Nick Compton, caught behind by Chris Read.

Broad probably won’t feature for Nottinghamshire again this season but he has certainly made his contribution count with this colourful cameo.
