A record equalling seventh wicket stand of 114 between Scott Elstone and Graeme White and six wickets from skipper Steve Mullaney rescued the day for Notts after they had asked Yorkshire to bat on the opening day of this Second Eleven Championship fixture.
 
Darren Pattinson had an early wicket sending Joe Root's stumps cart wheeling. However a combination of the seaming ball and varied bounce allied with no balls and wides from Pattinson and Charlie Shreck, who both enjoyed a long work out saw no successuntil Andy Carter replacing Shreck took two quick wickets, made the score 94-3
 
On the stroke of lunch, Mullaney took his first wicket then he wrecked the innings with a spell that yielded 5-24 off 8.2 overs as the visitors made 182. The total however included 46 extras. Carter took 2-26 and Pattinson returned 2-45.
 
Those extras looked costly as Notts slumped to 59-5 making a desperate start as Hales was run out being sent back by his partner Akhil Patel seeking a second run. Samit Patel followed three balls later caught behind. Only Mullaney with 27 looked comfortable. Akhil was out for 19 and then Mullaney was dismissed.
 
The two Sams, Wood and Kelsall, soon went as the slump continued to 71-6.
 
Gradually Elstone and White pulled the innings round. Both reached their half centuries from 71 balls with White being particularly severe on spinner Azeem Rafique hitting him for 20 in the space of seven balls.
 
Just as it looked that they would eclipse the seventh wicket record against Yorkshire set by Dusty Hare and Kenny Watson way back in 1976, Elstone was out for 60 and White followed two runs later for 55.
