Brett Hutton has built his craft on relentless consistency. In 2023, it bore fruit with his most successful season to date.
The Worksop-educated seamer took more scalps than anyone in the County Championship and concluded the One Day Cup as the Outlaws’ joint-leading wicket-taker.
Not content with contributions with the ball alone, he amassed a First-Class best with the bat, too.
Put simply, it was a year of never-ending milestones for the 31-year-old, who has now signed a two-year contract extension with the Green and Golds, which keeps him at Trent Bridge until the conclusion of the 2026 season.
Hutton’s 2023 Timeline
14 April: Having missed the season-opener in Hampshire, Hutton returns to the side with a vengeance, taking six of Somerset’s first innings wickets as Notts get their first win back in Division One.
4 May: Hutton takes his second five-fer in as many games at Trent Bridge, including four of Lancashire’s top six.
7 May: A heroic vigil keeps the Red Rose attack - which includes James Anderson - at bay for two and half hours. Hutton finishes with 23 from 141 deliveries as the Green and Golds secure a draw.
12 May: Hutton’s third five-wicket haul of the season helps Notts to an innings victory over Northamptonshire inside three days.
25 June: Despite losing the toss, Hutton makes hay on the first day in Taunton, finishing with figures of 5-34.
13 July: The seamer returns from a debilitating bout of cramp on day one to take his fifth five-fer of the season in the second innings against eventual champions Surrey, including the wicket of Rory Burns for the second time in the game.
28 July: By trapping Harry Finch lbw in Kent’s second innings at Trent Bridge, Hutton reaches 50 First Class wickets for the season.
3 August: The Outlaws start the One Day Cup in style by bowling Essex out for 63, with Hutton claiming 3-17 from eight overs.
13 September: After batting for two hours in the first innings at Kent, Hutton enters the fold in the second with Nottinghamshire following on and trailing by one run. He makes a First Class best of 84 from 130 balls in a partnership of 148 with Joe Clarke. Notts go on to draw the game with Kent six wickets down.
27 September: A sixth and final five-wicket haul of the season for Hutton against Middlesex - he’ll get two more wickets in the second innings to take a grand total of 62 in the season.
