James Hayes and Luke Fletcher took a wicket apiece, but Warwickshire enjoyed the upper hand on a rain-shortened first day of their Second XI Championship clash at Lady Bay.
Following morning showers, play commenced after lunch, with Hayes inducing Amir Khan (5) into edging to Matthew Montgomery in the sixth over.
Visiting skipper Hamza Shaikh hit a half-century before he too was caught by Montgomery, this time from the bowling of Fletcher.
But keeper Chris Benjamin seized the initiative, and was unbeaten on 112 at stumps, with Ismail Mohammed 82 not out at the close of play.
