Nottinghamshire’s Second XI secured a ten-wicket victory over Durham inside two days of play at South Northumberland CC – but face a waiting game to see if they can overhaul Northamptonshire and claim the Second XI Championship title.
The hosts resumed on 108/9 at the start of day three, with the entirety of the first day having been lost to inclement weather.
Mitchell Killeen reached his half-century before becoming the last wicket to fall, departing to Toby Pettman for 51.
With Durham dismissed for 119, some 166 runs in arrears, Notts enforced the follow-on and received early rewards when George Drissell was pinned by Pettman for 12.
Graham Clark (2) and Paul Coughlin (10) also fell cheaply, before an 89-run stand between Haydn Mustard and Jonathan Bushnell gave the hosts hope.
Mustard made 54 before being trapped by Fateh Singh, with Bushnell reaching 53 before George Burrows accounted for the opener.
From 123/3, Durham were now 153/5 – which soon became 153/7 as Singh struck with consecutive deliveries.
Singh and Pettman combined to mop up the tail, the seamer recording figures of 4/13 and the spinner finishing with 4/48, as the North East county narrowly avoided an innings defeat.
Requiring nine to win, openers Ben Martindale and Sammy King saw their side home inside two overs, King clubbing the winning four through cover.
Having completed their season, Notts sit second in the Second XI table, trailing Northants on average points per match – the metric via which the title-winners are determined.
Northants are due to resume their fixture against Leicestershire on 6/3 in their second innings, trailing by 157 runs ahead of the final day.
The league leaders then face Worcestershire from 16-19 September in their final match of the season.
