Notts Bowler Darren Pattinson hopes to make amends for missing last year’s Sheffield Shield final when he lines up for Victoria in the climax of Australia’s four-day competition.
Pattinson missed out on selection last season with Victoria able to call on established international players but seems certain to feature this time around despite an injury scare which saw him limp out on the opening day of his side’s final regular season game against Tasmania last Wednesday.
"I had to bowl in the second innings or I wouldn't be picked for the Shield final but luckily I got through," said Pattinson, who returned 3-15 from 12 overs after coming back into the attack, contributing to an innings victory.
"If I'd torn the muscle then there's not enough time for it to heal before next week anyway. I couldn't have waited or they wouldn't have picked me so I had to get out there, and it's pulled up fine.”
Pattinson was blighted by injury in his second season at Trent Bridge and his tally of 10 LV=County Championship wickets at an average of 87.2 represented a big downturn in form compared with the previous campaign. In 2008, Pattinson took 49 wickets at 25.61.
Victoria will begin Wednesday’s final at the MCG as clear favourites after finishing the regular season nine points clear of Queensland.
"We're in a situation where we haven't got much to pick from but I'm happy to get a game wherever I can,” said Pattinson.
"In the last two games of last season I bowled pretty well, but obviously we had the big guns coming back and I missed out. It's been a big ambition of mine to play in a Shield final so hopefully it comes true this week.”
